Classic Washboard Cookies: Simple, Buttery, and Irresistible

  • 1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups (315 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2-3 tbsp milk (as needed)

Instructions

1. Preheat and Prepare

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.

2. Make the Dough

  1. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Mix in the vanilla extract.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk, until a soft dough forms.

3. Shape the Cookies

  1. Roll the dough into small balls, about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter.
  2. Place the balls on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches (5 cm) apart.
  3. Using a fork, gently press down on each ball to create the classic washboard pattern.
