Classic Washboard Cookies: Simple, Buttery, and Irresistible

- 1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 1/2 cups (315 g) all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2-3 tbsp milk (as needed)
Instructions
1. Preheat and Prepare
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
2. Make the Dough
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Mix in the vanilla extract.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk, until a soft dough forms.
3. Shape the Cookies
- Roll the dough into small balls, about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter.
- Place the balls on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches (5 cm) apart.
- Using a fork, gently press down on each ball to create the classic washboard pattern.
