Italian Meatloaf Recipe

Step 1: Prepare the Vegetables

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Heat the olive oil in a small skillet over medium-high heat.
  3. Sauté the chopped onion and bell pepper for 3–4 minutes, until softened. Remove from heat and set aside.

Step 2: Combine Ingredients

  1. In a large mixing bowl, add the ground beef, Italian sausage, sautéed onion and peppers, garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, crumbled bread, milk, Worcestershire sauce, oregano, basil, parsley, 1 cup of mozzarella cheese (reserving 3/4 cup for topping), Parmesan cheese, and 1 cup of marinara sauce.
  2. Mix everything thoroughly using your hands until well combined.

Step 3: Shape the Meatloaf

  1. Transfer the mixture into a baking dish (any shape will work, but an oval dish is ideal).
  2. Mold the mixture into a loaf shape about 2 inches thick.
  3. Spoon 1/2–3/4 cup marinara sauce over the top and spread evenly.

Step 4: Bake the Meatloaf

  1. Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 50 minutes.

Step 5: Add the Cheese Topping

  1. Remove the meatloaf from the oven and sprinkle the reserved 3/4 cup of mozzarella cheese on top.
  2. Optionally, sprinkle a little dried basil for extra flavor.
  3. Return the meatloaf to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Step 6: Check for Doneness

  1. Ensure the meatloaf is cooked through and no longer pink in the center. Cooking time may vary depending on the thickness of the loaf.
  2. Let the meatloaf rest for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
